Movies

Here’s a random list of movies and tv-series that I’ve enjoyed – some more than others, but they’re all good. I would love to get recommendations for new movies (new as in ‘not on this list’), or to hear your opinion if you strongly agree/disagree with any of the movies on my list. Feel free to share your opinion!

  1. Great list already. So many brilliants flicks. OK so how about “The Cook, the Thief, His wife and her Lover”, “The Ghosts of the Civil Dead”, “Four Rooms”, “Boogie Nights” , “Shine” and a personal hilarious favourite Volere Volare (To want to fly) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Want_to_Fly
I’ll keep checking in to see what you add

    • Thanks for your tips, I will surely check them out. The first snow came during the night, so the movie season has officially started 🙂
“Shine” reminds me that I’ll have to add The Shining with Jack Nicolson on the list.

    • We watched Boogie Nights yesterday after your recommendation. It was a good movie, but the soundtrack was fantastic! It also had a l lot of well-known actors and it was funny to see them so young.

  2. Great list and there are a few I haven’t seen! Now I’ll have to do some serious searching for them… It’s a hard task for those of us whose movie tastes run all over the place but for gratuitous violence plus laughs rolled into one – anything with Jason Stratham (Crank, Transporter series); heart-warming, silly and sweet with lovely sets – The Hogfather (Terry Pratchett); all of the Thin Man movies; Chocolate with Johnny Depp; Like water for Chocolate; Deepa Mehta’s movies… I’ll have to go and have a look on my shelves and let you know more…

    • Oh yes, the transporter series is very good. In Norwegian we have an expression called ‘glad vold’ which, directly translated means happy-violence 🙂
Chocolat is a good movie – forgot to write it in the list!
I’ll definitely check out the other movies that you mention here.

  3. My favorite movie is Gladiator. I also love the movie Hannah and watch it frequently (?) Last night I saw Cloud Atlas and it was 3 hours I cannot get back although the quote ” From the womb to the tomb, we are all related” was the best part. Thanks for sharing your list, I have only seen maybe 1/3 but I always like a good movie.

      • YES! Thats the one- I feel like her a lot of the time- I plan on watching everyone on your list! Thanks- I love a great movie as I do not watch television much.

        • We don’t watch tv programs either. Sometimes we watch a documentary, but mostly we watch movies and these series. As you can see from this list, we love movies 🙂

  4. “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” *****
    “Vertigo” (Hitchcock)
    “Citizen Kane”
    “Godfather I”
“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”
    “Inception”
    “Schindler’s List”
“Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo”
    “Godfather II”

    😉

    • The Godfather, Inception, Schindler’s List & One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is already on the list.

«What’s Eating Gilbert Grape» and «Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo» should have been there already, but I forgot to write them down (I’ll add them now).

I’ll have to put Citizen Kane & Vertigo on my watch-list. Thanks for the tips!

  5. This is quite a list… It will take me hours to go through it… I have seen many titles I have missed… I like the idea CG 🙂

  6. I am glad to see Kite Runner on the list :). I would have recommended it, if you hadn’t included it yet. Have you read the book? If you want, I can email you an electronic copy of it 🙂

  7. Bad Boy Bubby – Gettin’ Square – The Castle – Rabbit Proof Fence – Romulus My Father – , Mad Max (1,2,3)

    • Thanks! Just added Rabbit-Proof Fence to the list. Excellent movie. The fact that it’s a true story makes it even better. I’m pretty sure that I saw it many years ago, but my wife hadn’t seen it before and I enjoyed watching it again.

  8. Hi CG 🙂 I’ve just finished watching “Das Leben Der Anderen” :). Gabriel Yared composed the music the same composer of Betty Blue soundtrack. I liked the movie. You are not the first one to have recommended it to me 😉

    • Yes, Da Leben Der Anderen is very good – loved it!
We watched a French movie tonight: “De rouille et d’os”. I’ve added it to the list here. Great storytelling.

  9. OUTSTANDING SELECTIONS!!!!!! You have the right taste for movies. Movies I love from the list…
Fight Club, Life is Beautiful, Amelie, Pan’s Labyrinth, Water for Elephant (A visual feast), The Departed, Gladiator, City of God, MEMENTO, Y Tu Mama Tam Bien, you know what I stop from here … so many Aviator, Black Swan (for acting), The Kite Runner …. let’s say we agree on a lot, A LOT of these movies. GREAT LIST.

    • Thanks Rommel. Black Swan is absolutely fantastic. I want to go to the opera to see Swan lake just because of that movie 🙂
I’ve been sick the last couple of days, so I’ve spent my time wisely (?) and watched the Jason Bourne movies. I’d seen them all before, but my wife hadn’t, so we watched them all. Nice action movies with cool effects, but in films like ‘Black Swan’, ‘Life is Beautiful’ and ‘La meglio gioventù’, you have these wonderful stories and the great art of story telling.

Last night we saw “Batman: The Dark Knight Rises”. It was horrible and a waste of time.

  10. I think that you should put “The Big Bang Theory” on the TV series list. I took some movie titles now 😀 Thank you 🙂

  11. The Wall St. Journal just yesterday wrote a huge piece on The Shawshank Redemption and how it has become an iconic movie in American culture through the power of television. It didn’t do well when it first came out in the movies but grew and grew in popularity over the years. Interesting list, Cardinal. Some I’ve seen and liked and others….not so much. Vive la difference! I LOVED Rabbit-Proof Fence.
