This is an old photo, shot with film and a point & shoot camera. The title of the photo really explains everything that’s happening in the scene. Since the theme of WordPress’ Weekly Photo Challenge this week is Nighttime.
I also decided to add a song which is self-made (D.I.Y.) and I would appreciate it if you take the time to listen to it (at least give it a chance. Listen to the first 15 seconds, then if you don’t like it: turn it off).
The lyrics are included. Both the English translation and the Norwegian original. Positive and negative feedback is appreciated on the photo and/or the song!
Knuste Hjerter – Broken Hearts, English Translation:
The tinkling sound, from underneath my feet,
didn’t come from the gravel, it came from the broken hearts.
The tinkling sound, from underneath my feet,
didn’t come from the gravel, it came from the broken hearts.
Broken hearts, scattered around,
floating like litter in the streets
blew in the wind and swirled around
and laid down to rest along the walls
Broken hearts, sliced into me
like shards of glass in my foot soles
they cut me so I bled, yes they got me bleeding
and predators followed my trail of blood, as I was staggering along the street
staggering along the street, under the cover of darkness
on a river of tears, on my way to your bed.
Broken hearts, scattered around,
floating like litter in the streets
blew in the wind and swirled around
and laid down to rest along the walls
Broken hearts, scattered around,
floating like litter in the streets
blew in the wind and swirled around
and laid down to rest along the walls
laid down to rest along the curbs, along the fences and houses.
Broken hearts, broken hearts.
slik at rovdyrene fulgte mine blodspor, ravende gatelangs
ravende gatelangs, i ly av mørket
på en elv av tårer på vei til din seng.
Knuste hjerter strødd rundt
fløt som søppel i gatene
Knuste hjerter virvlet rundt
og de la seg til ro langs veggene.»
Knuste hjerter strødd rundt
fløt som søppel i gatene
Knuste hjerter virvlet rundt
og de la seg til ro langs veggene.
La seg til ro langs fortauskanter, ved gjerder og ved hus
knuste hjerter, knuste hjerter.
That photo reminds me of places I’ve been to in the 70’s lol. I like the lyrics a lot.
Haha, I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only that’s experienced stuff like this!
This scene took place in the late 90’s, very close to much anticipated and overrated ‘new millennium’ (I’m not even sure if it was shot just before, or just after 2000, but approximately sometime around then). It’s nice to hear that you like the lyrics: there’s a lot of heart and soul in the lyrics (being young and having a broken heart can be heart breaking!).
I’m sure I could tell stories that would make your toes curl LOL. Your last line here about being young was cute and not in a condescending way…it’s just cute. Hey, I’m old…weird things start looking cute LOL.
I’d love to hear some of those stories! 😀
Hey! I’m old too (just ask any teenager and he/she will confirm this).
No way I’d type my stories here. I might be incriminated! Glad you’re amongst the generation that didn’t grow up with computers. 😀
Totally agree with you!
very cool.
wow 17 years since thats happened to me i am so glad i don’t dwink anymore booze lol 🙂
Student days!
You could replace any of these characters by me …
Haha, that’s great to hear Mr Smiths! 🙂
Your photo takes me back to the seventies too, hehe. 😮
Cool song!
Thanks Dina, I’m glad that you liked the song and I’m glad to hear that you partied hard in the 70’s!
Both the shot and the song are great. Honestly made.
Gracias Mrs Sobral.
Ah yes… the commonality of the global artistic community! Just joking – they say that if you can remember events like your pic (or the 60s,70s, 80s, woodstock, etc.) you weren’t there: that’s why we take photographs… love both!
Thanks. I have some fantastic/insane/funny/psychedelic memories from the 90’s, but I’m glad that I have some photos to guide my memory!
Haha looks like it was fun
I like the photo… erm… and I can relate to it too… 😉
…but I also like the song and how it is sort of up-tempo compared to the lyrics… I mean, with these lyrics, it could have been a sad ballad or something, but it is not at all. More of a mix between a punk and hippie vibe; and I say it positively. Cheers!
Thank you very much Benoit. You’re right about the up-tempo vs lyrics, they don’t seem to fit together.
I’ve also made other similar songs with that same kind of mix. One song I made has this West-African, up-tempo, happy tune with a catchy bass line, but the lyrics are extremely misanthropic and basically a big “Fuck You” to the world. I enjoy mixing things up like that.
I do these kinds of mixing from time to time too… (and by the way, I listened to some of your tracks on Youtube and the one called «Travelling India» I like a lot! Just enough instrumentation to support it and it makes the listener sort of traveling with you for a little while…)
Thanks for the feedback and for listening to the music Benoit. You just gave me the idea to list all my songs on a separate page here in the blog (instead of having them on the CardinalGuzman/about page).
The page doesn’t work like it’s supposed to. I’ll have to look into it when I’m home, but here’s the link: https://cardinalguzman.wordpress.com/music/
I recognize the setting in the photo! I also vividly remember the day after. And I was a slow learner. I like the photo!
Thanks Freddy. Apropos slow learner: In the Northern parts of Norway they have a saying that loosely translated goes something like this: “He/She was such a slow learner that I had to write it on my cock and fuck it into him/her”. (They’re experts at swearing in the Northern parts of Norway).
Memories are made of this…great shot, C! I really love the song and its upbeat murkiness. Got any more?
Takker Herr Gjest!
I have some more songs on my hard-disk and I’ll probably post some of them later. The only problem is that some of the recordings are really bad. In many cases I’ve played the songs too fast while recording them. At the time I was thinking “the faster, the better”, but that’s not true at all.
I forgot to say that I’ve already published a few songs, they’re found in separate posts, but they’re also collected here: https://cardinalguzman.wordpress.com/cardinal-guzman/.
I remember that first photo, maybe it was a different edit and I remember our conversation about it 😀 I can see that your moments of solitude have taken you to the memory lane 😉 I like seeing old pics, whether I’ve seen them or not before..
Thanks Paula. The solitude gives me time to sit down and look through old stuff, plus the time to do make some new stuff as well! It’s quiet in the house now, but I must admit that I also enjoy it.
Understandable 🙂
P.S. You sound better in Norwegian 🙂
Luckily! 😀
I had to laugh at your instructions for listening – I stayed till the end – it sounds like something I could listen to almost daily 😀
That’s great to hear. You can listen to it as much as you want Paula, I won’t stop you!
😆 I won’t have much time; I have to work, work at home, get packed, recover from my ailments and go to Italy (on Wednesday)
Italy? Sounds great. I’m looking forward to see some photos shot with your new camera!
this is awesome! great song!
where is the like button???
Thank you very much Woman! I love your nick.
I have a few photos like that from the 70’s when I was younger and wilder! The song reminds me of a song by the band Television- I liked it!
I’d love to see them if you feel like sharing them. Party photos are always fun. Thank you for the comparison to Television. I’d never heard them before, but looked them up on YouTube.
This brings back memories from when I was young and pretty and my ass didn’t droop halfway down to the knees.
Hahaha, thanks for a great laugh Nina! 😀 Hilarious!
Can’t listen to the songs now, will come back but if the lyrics and the photo are anything to go by it brings back hazy memories! Do you think nursing homes of the future might look, and sound, like this?
A party hard nursing home? I’d love to be in one of those!
First of all… Love that image…
Second of all… I listened more than 15 seconds and I didn’t turned it off. 🙂 I liked the song a lot! And the lyrics of course.
Thank you very much for the compliments on the photo, lyrics and music!
